South Carolina Racial Gerrymandering
The Supreme Court has upheld a racist gerrymandered voting map in South Carolina. The Supreme Court is no longer calling balls and strikes. They are just a political wing of the Republican Establishment. Alito wrote the majority opinion which ironically held:
“We start with a presumption that the legislature acted in good faith”
This is ridiculous when the legislature admits the maps are partisan not racist.
Why else would they allow South Carolina Republicans to create and keep a state voting map they drew to benefit their party.
A unanimous three-judge panel of the Federal District Court in Columbia, S.C., ruled in early 2023 that the state’s First Congressional District violated the Constitution by making race the predominant factor. A lower court found the legislature engaged in race-based districting and found the map diluted Black voters’ political representation. This results in the “bleaching of African American voters” from a district.
The contested district, anchored in Charleston, had elected a Republican every year since 1980, with the exception of 2018. But the 2020 race was close, with less than one percentage point separating the candidates, and Republican lawmakers “sought to create a stronger Republican tilt” in the district after the 2020 census.
