Honoring the Legacy of Dr. Kirk H. Neely

Dr. Kirk H. Neely passed away on Thursday, December 12, 2024. His funeral will be held at 2 PM on Friday, December 20th at First Presbyterian Church in Spartanburg. He was a beloved pastor, counselor, author, artist, and friend whose wisdom, compassion, and storytelling enriched countless lives around the globe. He leaves behind a legacy of faith, love, wisdom, laughter, and service that profoundly impacted everyone who had the privilege of knowing him.
The Trustees and staff of the Spartanburg County Foundation knew Dr. Neely as the community leader who started the interfaith Community Thanksgiving Service. For more than 25 years, the event has transcended differing faith traditions and drawn our community together with a spirit of unity in gratitude. The Foundation became involved with the service a few years after it began and continues to support the event and our community faith leaders.
Dr. Neely was instrumental in the formation of the Spartanburg Interfaith Alliance, a network of clergy, lay leaders and faith communities that have joined together for the purpose of contributing to the common good. Over the last decade, the Alliance has organized and facilitated an interfaith worship series, prayer vigils responding to national tragedies, educational tours, work groups for Habitat for Humanity homes, and events that have encouraged the community to join together as one people. The breadth of these efforts mirror’s Dr. Neely’s work in our community as a champion for improving the lives of the many he was able to reach.

The Spartanburg County Foundation Trustees and Staff join our community in deep appreciation for the legacy of Dr. Kirk H. Neely leaves with us all.
