DeSantis removed safety rules that protected vulnerable adults in Florida’s nursing homes. The legislative handouts to the powerful industry includes: more liability protections; reducing staffing levels; and reducing penalties for neglect and abuse. Nina Kohn is a law professor at Syracuse University and an expert in elder law. She said:

“Research shows that both staffing levels and the availability of skilled nursing staff are important predictors of the quality of care that nursing home residents receive. Florida’s new law reduces the number of hours of certified nursing staff time that facilities must provide to residents each day. This opens the door to nursing homes substituting trained staff for essentially unskilled labor. That is dangerous for residents and a clear step in the wrong direction.”

I guess all those campaign contributions were well worth it. It also got them vaccine shots.

The Washington Post revealed in January 2021 that MorseLife Health System directed vaccine doses for residents and staff to wealthy donors and board members. The Post reported that many of the donors were members of the Palm Beach Country Club. The Justice Department proved MorseLife facilitated the vaccination of ineligible people. They lied and said donors were volunteers.

The text message from MorseLife’s CEO Keith Myers was gross. He directed the facility’s fundraisers in December 2020 to give priority to the wealthy.

MorseLife agreed to pay $1.75 million to settle claims that it defrauded a Centers for Disease Control and Prevention program. Biden’s Justice Department announced the settlement stating 567 of the 976 — or 58% — who were vaccinated through MorseLife at a clinic in December 2020 were not eligible for the shot.

Illegal Actions

Meanwhile, DeSantis illegally removed elected State Attorney Andrew Warren. Hillsborough County State Attorney Warren has been voted into office twice, and has an excellent reputation for working with law enforcement. DeSantis is now arresting his political opponents like some kind of little dictator.

“Today’s political stunt is an illegal overreach that continues a dangerous pattern by Ron DeSantis of using his office to further his own political ambition,” Warren said in a written statement. “It spits in the face of the voters of Hillsborough County who have twice elected me to serve them, not Ron DeSantis.”

DeSantis also stripped Disney of a special tax status because the company opposed a new education law “Don’t Say Gay.”
