Fall Prevention
McKnight’s reported on a new study published in JAMA showing the need for safe fall prevention. Falls remain the leading cause of injury among older adults in the United States and among the top causes of death. The 20-year study noted deaths caused by traumatic falls are increasing. Overall, deaths from falls rose dramatically. More than 10,000 in 1999 to over 36,000 in 2020. A total of more than 478,000 occurring among U.S. adults aged 65 years or older during the 21-year study period.
In 2020, there were over 42,000 deaths caused by falls nationwide. 86% occurred in people aged 65 years and older. Clearly, we need to provide safe interventions to avoid injuries from falls.
“Given the increase in mortality due to falls among adults aged 65 years or older, continued work to prevent falls and reduce falls-related mortality is warranted.”
