Mike Lindell Lawyers Sanctioned

The Colorado Sun reported that two attorneys representing MyPillow founder Mike Lindell in a defamation case have each been fined $3,000 for submitting a court brief generated by artificial intelligence that contained nearly 30 inaccurate or fabricated legal citations.

U.S. District Judge Nina Y. Wang in Colorado issued the sanctions against attorneys Christopher Kachouroff and Jennifer DeMaster, stating that the attorneys failed to properly review or verify the accuracy of the filing, thereby violating Rule 11 of the Federal Rules of Civil Procedure.

The brief was submitted as part of Lindell’s defense against a defamation lawsuit filed by Eric Coomer, a former Dominion Voting Systems executive, who accused Lindell of spreading false claims that Coomer had helped rig the 2020 election. The attorneys initially claimed they mistakenly filed a draft but later admitted the brief had been generated using artificial intelligence.

Judge Wang called their explanations inadequate and referred both lawyers to their respective state bar associations. While noting that the sanctions brought her “no joy,” she determined that this penalty was the least severe action necessary to deter similar misconduct in the future.

Both attorneys have until August 4 to pay the fines or appeal the sanction.
