The news reported that Samuel Harrison has filed a notice of intent to sue two Lowcountry nursing home facilities, Riverside Health and Rehab and White Oak Manor, while arguing that both of these facilities failed to properly care for Edna Harrison before her death in Sept. 2023. Plaintiff Samuel Harrison believes that these failed actions contributed to the decline and ultimately led to the death of Edna Harrison. Samuel Harrison is listed as a representative of Edna Harrison’s estate in court documents.
Edna Harrison was admitted to Riverside in November of 2022 for physical and occupational therapy. Within several weeks, Edna had a severe wound at the base of her spine, and her mental state had changed. She was hospitalized when the facility allowed the wound to become infected.
Edna was then transferred to a different nursing home, White Oak Manor. Still, two months later, she returned to the hospital with a pressure ulcer and a severe bone infection, according to court documents. Edna sadly passed away the following September.
The filings allege that both facilities failed to implement preventive measures, treat her wound properly, monitor her health, or create a proper and adequate care plan. Samuel Harrison is requesting a jury trial and is seeking damages in the case.
This new course of legal action comes at a time when Riverside Health and Rehab continues to face scrutiny over its history of complaints regarding mismanagement and poor conditions. A months-long investigation revealed various issues, including missing money, filth, insects, and chronic understaffing, at this North Charleston facility. Some patients were even left in soiled beds, went without their proper medication, or were verbally abused by the staff
members, according to complaints.
Family members of current and former residents at Riverside have described the facility as “inhumane.” At the same time, federal regulators have cited the
facility for serious violations, including inadequate staffing and failures in patient safety.
White Oak Manor currently faces numerous pending medical malpractice lawsuits. White Oak has failed to respond for comment.
