“Crap Show”
WSAV reported on the “crap show” that is the operation at Oceanside Care Center on Tybee Island. Constant concerns are being raised about this sorry excuse for a nursing home. Often, the concerns are by the employees themselves.
Meanwhile other current employees refer to the facility as a “crap show,” and state, “The bed sheets are changing colors while they lay there due to the lack of care…If you’re a plus-size person, it’s very rare that they are going to clean you up.”
“My mom died in April, and I left in July. I just couldn’t go back there, because I blame the facility for her death.”
–former employee at Oceanside Care Center.
The mother of the original employee has spent eight years in the facility, only to be told by doctors that she was dehydrated, had dirty catheters, and her oral health was not even being cared for.
Some employees have rightfully taken their complaints straight to Oceanside management but were simply ignored.
Neglect must be a trait that runs from the top to the bottom of Oceanside’s team, as most employees are also reported to ignore and disregard the needs of residents. One report shockingly states “I have witnessed nurses turn the call light off. They don’t even try to figure out why the call light is on. ‘Do you need help? What’s going on?’ No, because they turn the light off and just forget about it.”
This offers a terrifying image of a loved one left alone and repeatedly pressing the call button, perhaps due to an emergency, but nobody caretakers care enough to give the distressed adults a passing glance.
As one employee put it, “They don’t have compassion. They don’t have love. They don’t have the patience to actually deal with these residents.”
One might wonder where such careless and mean employees came from. Unsurprisingly, most seem to have been hired after the last facility they worked at, Thunderbolt Health and Rehab, closed due to “multiple immediate jeopardy situations,” poor care, unsanitary conditions, etc etc.
The staff cannot be blamed too much in the situations, as experienced and knowledgeable management willingly hired these employees while being fully aware of their background.
Currently, the residents are said to live in so much fear that the thought of retaliation from the staff scares them away from speaking out.
To have such high levels of fear and oppression lurking in the margins of today’s society is an undeniable indication that we are failing in our promise to ensure justice and promote general welfare for every deserving citizen.
