Bankruptcies and Unemployment

Bankruptcies of large public and private companies totaled 71 in July, the highest monthly total in five years, according to S&P Global Market Intelligence data.

New graduates are having a tough time landing a job right now: The share of unemployed Americans who are new to the workforce is at a 37-year high.

The share ranges from a low of 1.6% in 2020 to a high of 13.9% in 1984. It dipped to 6.5% in September 2002, and rose to 13.4% by July 2025 the highest since 1988.

Both issues are from economic uncertainty over tariffs and Trump’s economic policy.
