Addiction Treatment

Overdose deaths declined in 2023. The Biden Administration and policymakers increased access to both Narcan, a medication that reverses opioid overdoses, and addiction treatment. These changes have saved lives. Some first aid kits include it. Pharmacies sell it over the counter.

People who overdose are now much likelier to get Narcan quickly enough to save their lives. Police officers and firefighters often administer it. Libraries and schools carry it. In addition, the Biden administration canceled $7.7 billion in student loans, bringing the total debt canceled to about $167 billion.

Meanwhile, Louisiana lawmakers approved a law classifying mifepristone and misoprostol, two drugs commonly used in abortions, as dangerous drugs—a category usually reserved for addictive medications—making it a crime to possess abortion pills without a prescription.

Trump has said he wants to regulate contraception and that his campaign would issue a policy statement on contraception “very shortly.”
