Lawyer Immunity
For any attorney who makes a living lying through their cases or embezzling money—you’re in luck.
Slate reported that Attorney General Pam Bondi was working to make your life much easier. As of last week, Bondi has been quietly working with the DOJ to revoke state bars’ rights to investigate fraudulent lawyers. This means that any lawyer who has been, or will be, caught violating state ethics requirements cannot be held accountable or even investigated by the state.
For example, every one of President Trump’s lawyers who has been caught blatantly lying in court would be released from all state consequences.
If Bondi’s new rule is upheld, the DOJ would be expected to take over all investigations of violations of state ethics—a process that will allow wrongdoings to be ignored and investigations to be prolonged indefinitely.
If the U.S. is to continue to hold its lawyers accountable, states must preserve their right to investigate the actions of the same lawyers they originally gave a license to.
