Improper Transfer

The Ocala News reported on the nursing home who caused two fractures when caregivers dropped her during a transfer. While receiving care from a nursing home in Ocala, Florida, Brandi Pridgeon was dropped by, not one, but two nurses during a transfer from her bed to her wheelchair.

Despite the necessary training nurses are expected to have in transferring patients, the two nurses did such a bad job that both Pridgeon’s leg and ankle were broken during the failed transfer. Pridgeon was then sent to the hospital, where she underwent surgery on her fractured leg and ankle.

Pridgeon is now suing for having had to endure physical and mental pains, and for losing her ability to lead and enjoy a normal life. She is another example of many patients who trust facilities with the promise that they will be properly cared for and improve their well-being. In the end, she was denied basic care, lost all trust in her caretakers, and endured extreme and unnecessary pain. Ultimately, her quality of life decreased so that she will never be the same again.

We must recognize Pridgeon’s sufferings in an effort to spread awareness of their shortcomings so fewer people may have to suffer in the same way that she did.
