Diabetes Overtreatment

Healio had a great article on the Journal of the American Geriatric Society recent study showing the common problem in nursing home care and medication administration related to diabetes. Type 2 diabetes overtreatment among nursing home residents is common. Too few nursing homes failed to attempt to decrease medication regimens appropriately.

About 40% of nursing home residents with type 2 diabetes may be overtreated
About 40% of nursing home residents with type 2 diabetes are either overtreated or potentially overtreated. Data were derived from Lederle LI, et al. J Am Geriatr Soc. 2022;doi:10.1111/jgs.17735.

Overall, 17% of nursing home residents with type 2 diabetes get overtreatment. 23% met the criteria for potential overtreatment.

“Our results suggests that these initiatives should target nursing home residents at high risk for harms from overtreatment, including those with a history of hypoglycemia, high levels of functional dependence or cognitive impairment.”
