Another caregiver caught

Medication theft is a major problem in the long term care industry. Another caregiver at a long term care facility is in trouble.

Aaliyah H. Patton pleaded guilty this week in Spartanburg County General Sessions Court. Law enforcement said she stole medicine prescribed to a resident at the assisted living home where she was working.

Lakewood Assisted Living in Boiling Springs employed Patton as a medical technician. The facility gave her access and the responsibility to administer narcotics and other medications. Patton unlawfully possessed a controlled substance that had been prescribed and medically necessary to a vulnerable adult living at the facility.

South Carolina Attorney General Alan Wilson allowed her to plead to only one count of unlawful possession of a schedule IV-controlled substance.

Patton was sentenced to six months in prison, suspended to three years of probation. No jail time.
