Nursing home rankings can be helpful but often are misleading if based on unreliable data. For example, the State had an interesting article listing the worst nursing homes in South Carolina. The rankings were based on based on CMS’ five-star rating system for nursing homes.
The CMS star rating system is based on staffing, health inspections and quality measures. Much of the federal data is self-reported and may be unreliable.
South Carolina data includes 187 facilities. 43 or about 23% currently have the worst one-star rating. And of those, 17 have been cited for abuse. The worst-performing nursing homes are listed on the Special Focus Facilities Program.
The rankings could be helpful for consumers. For more details on each nursing home’s rating, click here.
