Incontinence

UroToday had a great article about managing urine leakage in vulnerable adults. After interviewing and conferencing with various health care professionals in Central Catalonia, several challenges were identified in addressing unintentional urine leakage in patients.

Productive strategies were found to include building trust and effective communication between health care professionals and residents, anticipating residents’ continence needs, and planning activities that are beneficial to the residents. Overall, it is best to practice care that centers around the patient, and work with a team made up of multidisciplinary professionals.

These incontinence challenges have become especially prevalent following the COVID-19 pandemic, when healthcare providers found their workload increasing dramatically and their time management becoming more complicated. These complications do not exclude nursing home or other long-term care facilities, and the implementation of these strategies should be considered in every U.S. long-term care facility.
