Fraud?
Protect Our Care website reported 5 out of every 8 nursing home residents and more than 5 million home care recipients rely on Medicaid. Without it, the average family would face $111,000 a year in long-term care bills — a crippling financial burden.
Despite the importance of this program, Republicans have long been convinced that it is rife with fraud.
To justify taking away healthcare for those who need it the most, Republicans paraded outrageous claims in a June House Oversight Committee hearing that allegedly how billions of taxpayer dollars are wasted.
If Republicans actually wanted to save money, however, they wouldn’t have cut over $1 trillion from Medicaid and the Affordable Care Act to hand out tax breaks to billionaires and big corporations.
Furthermore, the Republican campaign against government waste is merely a political one, as the party is perfectly fine with Trump pardoning his fraudster friends who were convicted of stealing billions of dollars.
In a statement addressing this June hearing, Protect Our Care Director of Policy Programs Vaishu Jawahar said, “They are using baseless claims of widespread fraud to kick seniors out of nursing homes and rip away care from millions of Americans.”
While it is true that Medicaid has its problems, including serious concerns about future funding, it is an institution that is absolutely necessary for the health of millions of American citizens, including many elderly ones.
If Republicans want to get serious about government waste, they need to put taxpayer dollars to work for average Americans rather than provide tax breaks for the wealthy.
