U.S. Senator Cory Booker (D-NJ) is urging Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) Administrator Mehmet Oz to immediately reinstate a key transparency deadline requiring Skilled Nursing Facilities (SNFs) to report detailed information about their ownership, management, and related-party financial arrangements. U.S. Senators Ron Wyden (D-OR) and Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) also signed the letter.

“Billions of taxpayer dollars flow into SNFs each year, but increasing evidence suggests that complex ownership and related-party arrangements can obscure how those funds are used and whether they ultimately support resident care,” the letter said.

The CMS’s suspension of a January 1, 2026, deadline to provide this information further harmed transparency for the issue.

Concerns over private equity ownership, a rising trend for nursing homes, were also mentioned by the senators.

“A systematic review of twelve studies published between 2000 and 2024 found that private equity ownership of nursing homes in the U.S. was linked to a higher number of care deficiencies, increased hospitalization rates, and higher mortality among residents.”
