Specialized Wheelchairs
A recent study reported by Medical Xpress suggests that switching wheelchair types when older adults enter nursing homes may increase their risk of serious injuries, particularly fractures. Researchers examined 215 individuals and found that about 40% had previously used more supportive, multifunctional wheelchairs.
After admission, when these specialized chairs were often no longer available only those who had used multifunctional wheelchairs experienced fractures, while no fractures occurred among those who had used standard wheelchairs beforehand. Although the study does not prove that the change in wheelchair directly caused the injuries, it highlights how the loss of customized mobility equipment may contribute to greater fall risk.
Overall, the findings emphasize the importance of maintaining continuity in patient care and ensuring that nursing home residents have access to properly fitted and supportive equipment to reduce preventable injuries.
